Live Event Design, Install and Operation
TechSoc provides full technical solutions in lighting, sound & projection design, setup and operation for University of York Student Groups
Have you ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes for theatre and live events? Do you want to be a part of some of the biggest events on campus? If so then come and join us!
We are a society at the University of York for anyone with an interest in stage and live event lighting, sound and projection, whether you have had previous experience in shows or have never even set foot in a theatre.
We hold training for anyone who wants to get started, and we provide opportunities to get involved in a wide range of events with our partner societies both on and off campus.
Who is this society for?
We welcome new members whether you have done tech before or are completely new to lighting and sound. If you haven't done tech before, then don't worry! Our training sessions will cover all the skills you need to know, which you can then grow by shadowing on our shows.
For experienced members, there are opportunities for helping to train new technicians, and to take on a management role for our events.
Becoming a Member
Membership is necessary to be able to use our equipment, take part in the training sessions and get involved in shows.
The best way to get started is to follow us on Facebook or drop us a message from there. You can also email us using email@example.com
Work on a project
Production roles for a project include technical manager, lighting designer, lighting desk programmer, lighting operator, lighting rigger, sound designer, sound operator and live sound engineer. Often people may take on several roles. An experienced member will always be on hand to help out as your project manager.
About the society
Technical Theatre Society was started with the aim of providing better collaboration between societies at York, to be a gateway for students who want to get involved in running shows, and a resource for other societies to easily find technicians and hire equipment.
We also give the societies the flexibility to perform in venues that aren't fitted out with permanent lighting and sound equipment, using our stock of portable equipment.
Our training programme is based around ETC Eos lighting control software, on Gio@5, Ion and Nomad consoles. ETC Eos consoles are widely used in many theatres across the UK and US.
We run the technical side of events by YUSU Society and Colleges with anything from theatre and presentations to dance and live music.
We are equally comfortable working in venues small and large, and dedicated theatre spaces with their own equipment, or in temporary spaces with our portable lighting and sound.
How we work
Drop us an email at firstname.lastname@example.org to get the conversation started and we'll assign a project manager to your event
Your project manager will be in touch to organise arrangements, discuss any costs and gather the information we need to make your event a success.
They'll then put you in touch with designers to design creative elements of the technical side as well as arranging crew for the event itself and organising the equipment to be used.
We don't charge for our time, and only pass on our expenses to run your event. This normally amounts to around £20 for an on-campus event, but be sure to check our Services and Fees page for more details
